Movin' up - from prototype to product

We touch 30 to 40 million people through the work we do for our clients. Now we’re ready to reach out to those people with our own product. We've had an overwhelmingly positive response to our prototype. We've got the audience, we've got the client base; we just need to finish the product. We're ready to hit the ground running and we're looking for a skilled developer to take us to the next level.

This is a chance to work on a start-up in a start-up environment, but without the big risks. We are an established interaction design and strategy firm who is building a tool that will make a significant improvement in the space. Ruby on Rails seems like a good fit for the product and team, but we're flexible in working with another platform.

What are we looking for?

You've got to be a stellar thinker who knows how to move from brainstorm to prototype quickly. In a start-up business it all comes down to momentum—how do you release something fast to your customers that works? You have to be comfortable with change and not fall in love with your code. Mistakes are good, rapid iteration is great.

What skills do we need?

As a Web Developer, here are some of the things you'll need to know:

  • Object Oriented Programming
  • RESTfull Application Design
  • Ruby on Rails (or be able to pick it up quickly)
  • MySQL
  • Subversion

Need a reason to join the team? Here are 17:

  1. Food. We stock the cabinets with food. Yeah, most of it’s full of sugar, but we try to throw in some healthy snacks. Cup o’ noodles is still a weakness for some of us though.
  2. 401k plan. All you have to do is say how much and we do the rest.
  3. Health insurance. 100% coverage.
  4. And eye care. We also take care of those eyes.
  5. And teeth too. We have dental coverage. Got to impress those clients :)
  6. Cell phone coverage. Can you hear us now?
  7. Profit sharing. We’re a team of entrepreneurial-thinking workers. It’s important to us that everyone see the benefits of their hard work.
  8. Free dry cleaning. Hate dressing up? We’ve taken the hard work out of putting on the snazzy dress shirt or blouse.
  9. Free house cleaning. Yep, we think getting stuff done at home is just as important as getting stuff done in the office.
  10. A growing library. Need a book? Just put it on the wish list and it will be added to our library.
  11. 3 weeks vacation. And all those common holidays too. Work hard, play hard.
  12. Lunches. Now and then we like to order sushi, and if you’re working late we don’t mind chipping in for dinner.
  13. Start-ups. Some people go work for start-ups. We help start start-ups.
  14. Challenging work. We believe that everyone has a brain to think – we make you use every last brain cell.
  15. Flex-time. Hey, things come up now and then. What’s dental coverage when you don’t have time to get those teeth drilled?
  16. A great team. It’s fun to work on great projects, but it’s even better to learn something new from a team member.
  17. A fun work environment. You see this on other company websites, but we are really committed to making work fun.

Brian Mariani, Ruby on Rails RecruiterHi, I’m Brian

I work at mirRoR, where we connect agile Rails developers and employers.

We started as Rails programmers ourselves (and are currently working on a few social, facebook, and iPhone apps). This background and network help us identify quality opportunities in the industry.

That’s especially important today. While many venture-backed web 2.0 startups are cutting costs amidst this economic climate, we are working with a number of companies that are self-sufficient, cash-positive, and well capitalized for the long-term.

I’d be eager to briefly discuss where you are in the process and see if there is a potential fit, either for the opportunities listed here, or those posted elsewhere.

Let’s chat!
